Stages in the City of Salzburg
Argekultur Salzburg
The ARGEkultur is a cultural institution for alternative arts and an event venue in the Nonntal district of Salzburg.
The ARGEkultur came into being as a demonstration and activist platform protesting against the Salzburg Festival culture. In November 1981 the group, consisting of 60 initiatives and groups, founded the ARGE Rainberg, whose objective was to persuade the city council to renovate the old Stern Brewery at the foot of the Rainberg hill. In 1987 the “ARGE Culture Grounds Nonntal” were opened in the old barracks in the Mühlenbacherhofweg.
At the beginning of October 2005 the "Culture Ground Nonntal” moved to a neighbouring building in the Josef-Preis-Allee 16, directly adjacent to the SAK Football pitch and changed its name to ARGEkultur Salzgurg.
Among others the following clubs are affiliated with ARGEkultur:
- Amnesty International
- Arge Beisl
- ARGE Conscientious Objectors and Civilian Service Advice Centre
- Radiofabrik 107,5
- Subnet

PRGRAMMATIC AND PHILOSOPHY
To offer standard-setting artistic performances in the realms of opera, drama and concert within a compact period of five to six weeks during the summer, performances which are staged in a city whose perfectly maintained baroque architecture provides the most beautiful setting: this is the idea behind the Salzburg Festival.
The Salzburg Festival is often described as the largest and most significant Festival in the world, and in fact this reputation is endorsed by numerous superlatives – not only in the number of presentations and performances, the number of annual visitors or the number of tickets on sale. In the months of July and August Salzburg becomes home to some of the most famous names, whether conductors, stage directors, singers, actors and virtuosi. And even the most prominent opera stars rehearse their performances for weeks and work hard to maintain the Festival philosophy created by its founder Hugo von Hofmannsthal: no run-of-the-mill performances induced by routine but “dramatic acting in the strongest sense”.
Mozarteum
Every year since 1954, around the time of Mozart’s birthday on the 27th January, the International Foundation Mozarteum organises a concert series that has become a highlight in the European concert calendar, and which is seldom matched throughout the rest of the year: The Mozart Week.

Salzbug City Theatre – The Landestheater Salzburg
Welcome to the Salzburg Landestheater!
From September to June we offer operas, drama, ballets, operettas, musical, youth and children’s theatre. In the Landestheater, in the Large Festival Hall (October), the Small Festival Hall (February), in the Kammerspiele and on occasions in other venues in Salzburg such as the Stadtkino cinema!
Elisabeth Bühne
The Elisabeth Bühne is the biggest independent ensemble theatre in Austria. With approx. 10 drama productions and a children’s piece each season, two theatres are played daily from September to the beginning of July. The carefully selected programme offers everything form ancient works and classics to modern pieces, tragedies, comedies and new experimental theatre forms providing a wide choice for theatre enthusiasts of all ages.
The Theatre is affiliated with an acting school and a publishing house for children’s musicals. The theatre is located in the Peterbrunnhof, part of the former estate of the Monastery of St. Peter in Salzburg’s Nonntal district, directly below the fortress in the southern centre of the city. The historic building, which dates back to the Middle Ages was completely renovated by Salzburg County Council and equipped with the most modern technical features.
Rockhouse Salzburg
Since the very beginning, as the idea took shape, there was one thing that had already been determined, the name “Rockhouse”… Today despite opposition, numerous battles, changes etc. it is an integral part of Salzburg’s cultural landscape, stronger than ever before. We, as the operators, initiators, musicians and as people, associate more to it than just a name. The term is the epitome of something else, something that is always new and always changing.
An institute like the Rockhouse does not have responsibilities to carry out, it has needs that have to be fulfilled, namely to live culture. To make culture tangible – a delicate process of provoking awareness. Not to take culture as a hollow term, but use it to reflect upon change – personal, social, ecological, political phenomena – and to take up these themes in our work.
Puppet Theatre Salzburg
A visit to Salzburg’s world famous Puppet Theatre for a performance of “The Magic Flute” or other operas is an absolute must for every Salzburg guest.
If you think it’s all about children’s puppet shows, then think again! Beautifully crafted puppets play the roles normally reserved for great opera stars and recordings of the world’s most significant operas form the basis of this fascinating experience. Having said that, this is the perfect way to introduce children to the joys of opera and classical music.
Artists of international standing, in particular stage directors and stage designers work again and again for the Salzburg Puppet Theatre. Their participation in the Salzburg Festival and Salzburg’s Easter Festival emphasize the quality of the performances.
The Small Theatre Salzburg
After last year’s success we will be offering summer theatre at its finest again this year. Until now the venue has always been the Stiegl Brewery but because of renovation work this year Salzburg’s Summer Theatre takes place in the Small Theatre in Salzburg and therefore indoors. The pieces played and the support given by the adjacent Urban Keller with outdoor restaurant right in front of the theatre means that the summer flair is maintained. Between the acts and after the performances you can reflect upon a fascinating Salzburg theatre evening under the stars.
And so; laugh with us with “Loriots Dramatic Work” and experience Goethe’s “Faust”. For children of three years and upwards fairy tales and children’s fables are offered.
Come and experience the Summer Theatre! We look forward to your visit!
Toihaus
Toihaus, small but great, always curious about the magic of art.
For 22 years now the Toihaus Theatre on Mirabell Square has established itself as a modern, adventurous theatre. In our programme you will find self-written pieces inspired by contemporary and topical political themes, adaptations and texts, lyrics and novel presentations, premiers of contemporary and often unknown theatre authors and musical compositions. Our repertoire is the result of our experimentation. The charm of the theatre can be ascribed to the combination of dance, speech, music, mime, art and new media. The issues addressed are always current.

Kunstbox Seekirchen
Nature forms the basis and is the focus of the work at the Culture Association Kunstbox this autumn 2007. The main topic is the character of moor-landscapes and examines in particular the local “Wenger Moor”. With this as a central theme, various single exhibits and objects of art related to one another will be on show and will be presented according to a specific principle in order to create a homogenous exhibition. With this in mind two artists Wofgang Buntrock and Frank Nordiek (Atelier Landart/Hannover) and the local Seekirchen artist Hans Schmid were invited to create artworks made of natural materials that can be found here on the “Wenger Moor”.
